sweater love

This blog was inspired by my shopping travels recently and I just needed to share.

How many times have you seen sweaters hung on a rack? Many perhaps? This is a definite no no. I have seen beautiful cashmere and wool sweaters hung and want to cry. The fibre weakens because it is being pulled from being hung, and it leaves you with a hanger pull on the shoulder that won’t really go back to its original shape. I often find myself making jokes with sales associates letting them know what happens when sweaters are hung :) Fold your sweaters, PLEASE! They will live a long and happy life with proper care.

Here are a few more tips on caring for your favourite sweaters:

Did you know you don’t have to wash your sweater each time you wear it? The more you wash the more quickly it will get worn down. The simplest way is to spot clean, and because wool or cashmere is a natural fibre, it cleans very well.

When it is time to clean your sweater (at the end of the season perhaps) avoid putting it in the washer machine. If you do choose to use the washer machine take out your sweater before the spinning process. The spinning process is what causes shrinkage.

A lot of labels recommend dry clean only, but hand washing in cold water works best in my opinion. When drying, hanging will cause it to stretch from the weight of the water, so always lay it flat on a clean towel to dry. Then FOLD!

Pilling is often a big giveaway that your sweater has been well-loved, so I highly recommend investing in a pill remover that can be used when you feel is needed. I am addicted to this thing! :) I promise you, it will make your sweater look like new again.

Happy fall and sweater love.
